well.
My "aunt" got me a purse for X-mas. The price tag that's on it says
$495.00. I'm not a huge fan of the bag so I go to the store to return
it. Only to find that the bag is now on sale for $249.99.
We call her to ask for the receipt so I can return it for the price
that she bought it for. Turns out, she didn't buy it at the store.
Rather she bought it online and paid about $320 s&h included.
So here are the proposed solutions:
1.) I spend $20 to ship it back to her and ask her to ship it back to
the place she got it from. Have her refund it, and mail me a check for
the cost of the bag.
2.) My mom was willing to buy the bag off of me for $250.
3.) I pick out another bag and use the $250 of the bag as store credit.
4.) I keep the bag and never use it.
Rationalizations:
1.) probably the most economically sound for me. However I'm losing
$20 in shipping, my aunt loses $60 (assume each mailing is $20) in
shipping. Just to get me $320. And I probably hurt my aunts feelings.
2.) here's the caveat. My mom also doesn't like the bag that much. So
she'd probably only use it twice. In this scenario, I would lose $70.
My mom wouldn't really be gaining anything either.
3.) I lose $70 in the worth of the bag. But I could also potentially
get something I legit like.
4.) I'm stuck with something I don't want that's worth quite a bit of
money.
What do I do?
I picked option 3. I found a bag that I relatively liked. Slash it was
my favorite thing in the store: a dark green handbag for $334.99. So I
shelled out another $90 for something I'll use and my aunt will feel
like she actually gave me something for x-mad. Slash when I tell her
this story, I'll leave out the price difference.
Now I'm following my mom around Short Hills mall. Did you know they
openned a Madewell here? I was so excited.

you should return the bag for store credit and get something you like. from a marginal cost/ benefit perspective its the best. you never really had the full cash value you just had the bag. cash is generally better than actual products, so it would make sense that you suffer a loss everytime u trade goods for cash or even cash value.
its not worth putting other people through trouble and cost, nor is it good to shift the loss to someone else (like your mom). your best bet is to see if there is something you like available and use the store credit.
