Empty Tank

So I drive a relatively old car. it's a 1998 Integra. ok so it's not THAT old, but 10 years is still a lot and a lot can go wrong with a car.

Besides, the weird humming when I hit around 45 mph and the always-on hand brake light, my biggest complaint about my car is that my gas light no longer works. I found this out the hard way in high school. One morning, while running late to get to school, I couldn't start my car. Like couldn't for the life of me get the engine to turn. I had no idea why -- I popped the hood, checked the engine oil and then decided that's all I knew how to do (it obviously wasn't a flat tire or a radiator issue... the other two things I know how to do in a car...) and so I went to bother my mom. Thank goodness she hadn't left the house yet. Now, my mom isn't particularly good with cars. She's your typical asian woman driver. But she does have a lot of common sense. She poked her head into the car and laid it out simply for me, "You're out of gas." Sure enough, after driving my mom's car to the gas station and putting into my car, it started working again. The wonders of gasoline.

Anyhow. The other day, I was running late to work and so I decided to drive to work since it's faster. I got right to the end of I-78 where I hit traffic. At this point, there wasn't anywhere I could get off and so I just sat there... and then I looked down and saw that my gas tank was practically empty. Like, almost completely empty. I got super nervous... There weren't any exits around, I was already late for work, and my odometer already read higher than it normally does on a tank (in retrospect, probably b/c I was driving on the Interstate instead of small roads). Eventually I got to Jersey City and drove to the only gas station I knew...

I got there and put 9.871 gallons of gas in my 10 gallon tank.
