Ew, it happened.

My neighbor from around the corner is also Chinese. But he is one of those self-racist Chinese people. He purposefully made fun of Asian people, was biased against Asian people. Our parents became friends, pretty much only because it's good to be friends with your neighbor so when you go on vacation, someone can come and water you plants/pick up your mail. But I always hated having to put up with this kid. Thankfully by the 3rd or 4th time our parents hung out, he got the hint and stopped coming over. HW is a year older than me -- went to Michigan to study poli sci -- I assume b/c he thought it'd have the least amount of Asians in the major. And now he's in this second year in law school at Rutgers -- Newark campus.

I always knew that I'd run into him as well. He also lived at home and commuted daily to Newark for classes. But I definitely did not want to run into him. and well. today it happened. We never made eye contact, but I'm pretty sure he saw me, and I saw him. I think there's a unspoken agreement that we wouldn't try to make small talk. I'm very aware of what he's up to in life, as is he to me because our parents talk. But it's still weird to think of the situation as it is. I just hope he doesn't go into Newark on the same train as me in the future. That'd be an awkward situation.

I hate when that happens -- lucky for me it's pretty easy to hide from your past in the NYC subway system. Let's hope tomorrow brings you some blissful anonymity!
